The top U,S.
military officer has denied any coup in eastern Ukraine, saying he believes there is no evidence of a Russian plot to oust President Viktor Yanukovych.
Gen. Vincent Stewart told reporters Wednesday that the U.N. mission in Ukraine, which has been trying to get to the bottom of what happened, was not looking for a coup and is not looking at anything other than the results of the election.
The U.K.-based Interfax news agency reported Wednesday that Ukrainian security officials have told Interfax they are unable to find any evidence of the plot.
They are instead focused on finding the person or persons who may have been behind it.
Stewart’s comments come as the U:S.
has imposed sanctions on senior members of the Putin-backed government in Kiev.
Those sanctions have been blocked by the U, the EU and other countries.
