What if, instead of playing the same game over and over, you could play it with the whole world at your fingertips?
That’s the vision of Lego’s CEO and CTO of consumer products Lars Ulrich.
And while there’s no word on when Lego would bring the game to market, the company is making it a priority.
Last month, Ulrich said the company has been working on plans for a new game that would have a single-player mode, but would also let you play with up to 100 other players.
This week, the Lego Group confirmed the first details about what Lego’s next project will be.
“What we’re doing with chess is one of the most exciting things that we’re working on,” Ulrich told Bloomberg Businessweek.
“It’s something we’re very passionate about.
We’re really excited about it.”
The company is working with a team of around 20 people who have already designed and built an entire chess set for Lego, he said.
“And that’s a big thing for us, to get this set together in a way that makes sense for the player.”
The game will be “a very challenging game, to be honest, with very clever moves,” Ulric said.
But that’s not the only thing Lego is doing to help with its chess game.
The company’s CEO has also been working closely with a group of game developers.
“We’re going to do some really innovative things, like some of the things that are coming out of the Game Design Lab at the company,” Ulry said.
One such project is a chess simulator called Chess Quest, which was created in partnership with Codemasters.
“This is a game that will make it very easy for people to get started in the game and really get into it,” Ulrik said.
Ulrich, who recently left Lego to run a software company, has said he’s been excited about Lego for some time, and he’s excited about the company’s potential.
“I think there’s a lot of potential in the world,” he said last month.
There’s a very big demand for a real-time chess game that is really, really accessible to a wider audience.”
